Dr. Iozzo has been mentoring students from the University of Manchester Life Sciences industrial placement program since 1998. The program provides students with indispensable experience of working in a fast-paced research environment, under the supervision of highly experienced seniors. The selected undergraduate students have the opportunity to work as part of a strong team for a year, gaining experience of the day-to-day workings of a lab, in a mature, realistic research environment. Skills gained are highly translational to both final year projects and future employment, and many students are given the opportunity to be involved in grants and published research generated by the team. The lab works with cutting edge technology to elucidate key targets for cancer therapeutics, allowing trainees exposure to complex techniques and develop their scientific knowledge beyond the lecture setting of university.
Working at Thomas Jefferson University, a large and successful Institution located near the historical Constitution Hall of Philadelphia, would also provides invaluable experience of “real” science that is highly reliant on what is required by society, as defined by their health, and driven by public funding. The university provides trainees with exposure to accomplished researchers, well established laboratories and pioneering research techniques in an interdisciplinary setting, providing students with a greater insight into the importance and necessity of collaborative science in order to overcome the challenges of scientific discovery.
2014-2015 I am a biomedical sciences student from the University of Manchester, England. I am spending a year in the Iozzo Lab as part of my industrial placement, gaining invaluable experience of work in a fast-paced research environment. I am very much enjoying my time in Philadelphia, and I am looking forward to exploring as much of America as possible in my short time here!
2014-2015 I am working as a pre-doctoral fellow in Dr Iozzo’s lab for my placement year, which is part of my Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, UK. In the lab I have been working on the connection between endorepellin and autophagy. In my free time I enjoy reading and training in taekwon-do.

2010-2011 Matthew Paul is working on his final year of study at The University of Manchester, to obtain his B.Sc. (hons) in Genetics with Industrial Experience. While in the Iozzo Lab, Matthew was studying the role of endorepellin in angiogenesis.
2010-2011 While in the Iozzo Lab, Matthew was studying the role of endorepellin in angiogenesis. Matthew is Published with Dr. Iozzo in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. His final year project is with Prof. Charles Streuli, Director of the Wellcome Trust for Cell-Matrix Research at the University of Manchester, studying the role of integrins in breast cancer and development.
2010-2011 Hannah Painter is currently undertaking an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, UK. This past year year she was working on the role of decorin in cancer and RTK signalling in Dr. Iozzo's lab as part of her industrial experience portion of her degree. She will graduate from Manchester in 2012, and hopes to continue her further education in the scientific field.
2009-2010 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Nadia was working on the role of decorin in cancer and RTK signalling. She is currently working on her Ph.D. at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in London (Faculty of Medicine, Imperial). She is researching Metabolic Signalling under the supervision of Dr. Dominic Withers.
2009-2010 While working in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Michael was studying the role of proteoglycans in cancer biology.
2008-2009 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Michal was studying proteoglycans in cancer biology, focusing on antigens. Michal is currently obtaining his Masters in Biomedicine at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
2008-2009 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Angela was studying proteoglycans in cancer biology. Angela is currently obtaining her Master's in Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
2008-2009 While in DR. Iozzo's lab, Elizabeth was studying proteoglycans in cancer biology. Elizabeth is currently doing a Ph.D. in the Department of Immune Cell Biology at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Her project focuses primarily on indentifying the mechanisms of B Cell Receptor internalisation.
2007-2008 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Helen was studying decorin and EGFR. Helen is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Manchester, UK.
2007-2008 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Ashley was studying the interaction of decorin with met receptor. Currently she is in the second year of Ph.D. study at the London Research Institute,in the cell motility lab, working for Cancer Research UK. Her project focuses on the role of clathrin during the vaccinia virus life cycle. Specifically, exploring a role for clathrin in facilitating actin based motility.
2006-2007 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Jack studied the biology of decorin as an anti-tumor agent. After he graduated from University of Manchester with a B.Sc., he spent a year at the University of Pennsylvania working on gene therapy in Cystic fibrosis. Now he is back in England working for Novartis doing research on IgE and its role in asthma.
2006-2007 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab Ben was studying the biology of endorepellin as an antiangiogenic factor. Ben is currently working on his Ph.D. from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
2005-2006 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab Michelle was studying the biology of endorepellin in human endothelial cells.
2005-2006 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab Chris was studying the genetics of adenovirus vector harbouring human endorepellin. Chris is currently a Ph.D. Graduate Student at the University of Bristol, UK.
2004-2005 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Paul was studying the role of decorin in suppressing tumor cell growth in vitro and in vivo. Paul is currently working on his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester, U.K.
2004-2005 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Emma was studying the biology of endorepellin in human endothelial cells and molecular mechanisms.
2003-2004 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab Laura was studying the genetics of adenovirus vector harbouring human endorepellin. Laura is currently a Ph.D Graduate student at Rockfeller University, New York, NY, in the laboratory of Dr. Sandy Simon. Laura is using the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum to study the dynamics of clathrin mediated endocytosis throughout growth and development..
2003-2004 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Anna studied the genetics of a retroviral-based vector carrying human decorin under the control of an inducible promoter. Anna is currently a Ph.D Graduate student at the School of Molecular Biosciences, University of Sydney, Australia.
2002-2003 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Siobhan was studying Genetics of a retroviral-based vector carrying human Decorin under the control of an inducible promotor. She went on to recieve her MBChB in Medicine from the University of Manchester, U.K.
2002-2003 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Amy was working on the genetics of adenovirus vector harbouring human endorepellin. She went on to get her Ph.D. from Oxford University.
2001-2002 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Yvonne was studying the genetics of adenovirus vector harbouring the mouse decorin gene. She went on to obtain her Ph.D. from the Univeristy of Manchester, U.K.
2001-2002 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Robert was studying the determination of novel interacting partners for perlecan protein core.
2000-2001 While in Dr. Iozzo's lab, Rachel was studying the role of perlecan in cancer and angiogenesis. She went on to obtain her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, U.K. She is currently Assistant Professor at the University of Newcastle, U.K.
